To encour­age motorists to switch to pub­lic tran­sit, Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneg­ger autho­rized free pas­sage Mon­day on fer­ries, buses and the Bay Area Rapid Tran­sit rail system.

On one hand, com­muters should be using BART any­way, but on the other hand, increased rid­er­ship will mean very crowded trains. I know lots of peo­ple who hate being around so many peo­ple and would rather just drive alone than be has­tled on a busy sta­tion and busy BART train.
