Pet Peeve About Lap Swimming

I don’t know how many times that I’ve experienced this, but I think it happens at least once a day on days that I swim. I hate it when someone tries to get into your lane without notifiying you or anyone else that is swimming in your lane. It’s proper lap swim etiquette. You notify everyone in the lane that you’re coming in AND you don’t get in until you do.

When circle swimming, you have to be conscious of those swimming with you. The worst thing that could happen is swimming into each other. You can’t be conscious of those swimming with you if you don’t know how many people are in your lane. People can’t just be getting into the lane without notice.

Case in point: Today I swam. This other girl and I were splitting the lane. This guy tells me that he’s getting in and precedes to swim without notifying the other girl. He uses my lane until I start swimming. When the girl finishes her lap, I tell her that there’s another person in the lane. Her response: “Oh wow.” She had no idea there was a third person in the lane nor did she know that we were supposed to circle swim.

Idiots that do this: STOP. You’re being idiots.
